Abstract
Nature-based tourism in peri-urban areas faces the challenge of balancing visitor experiences with environmental conservation, smart destination management, and local community participation. This study aims to identify and prioritize the dimensions of nature-based tourism destinations in peri-urban areas, using Torghabeh Village, Mashhad, as a case study. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was employed. In the exploratory qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews with experts and content analysis were used to identify the initial dimensions and indicators. Subsequently, 24 relevant experts in tourism, urban and rural planning, and management were purposively selected and participated in three consecutive Delphi questionnaire rounds. In the first Delphi round, the identified dimensions and indicators were assessed through a structured questionnaire; in the second round, experts evaluated their importance using a five-point Likert scale; and in the third round, controlled feedback was provided to reassess the items and reach consensus. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Kendall’s coefficient of concordance, and the final prioritization was determined based on Delphi results and expert consensus. The findings identified four dimensions: Nature-Based Experience Design, Smart Destination Services and Management, Environmental Resilience and Ecological Sustainability, and Local Community Synergy and the Experience Economy. Their final mean scores were 4.72, 4.58, 4.44, and 4.29, respectively, with Nature-Based Experience Design receiving the highest priority. These findings reflect the perceptions and consensus of experts regarding the case-study destination. Accordingly, peri-urban destination planning should integrate experience design, smart management, environmental sustainability, and community participation within a coordinated destination planning framework.
